With the two remaining races of South Africa’s inaugural Skyrunner® Series fast approaching, excitement is mounting as trail runners around the country prepare to “reach for the sky” to accumulate points to improve their standing in the national competition.
Still in its infancy, the national circuit this year comprises three races, all sanctioned by the South African Skyrunning Association (SASA): the Ingeli Skymarathon®, which was held in KwaZulu-Natal in April, the upcoming Matroosberg Skymarathon® in the Western Cape on 25 October, and the Lesotho Ultra Trail on 29 November.
Modelled on the European Skyrunner® Series, South Africa’s national circuit will see skyrunners clocking up ranking points at each event in which they participate during the course of the year. A maximum of 100 runners in 2014 will receive these points, with the top male and female skyrunner claiming the ultimate prize: to be crowned the national skyrunning champions.
“As the number of SASA-sanctioned skyrunning events increases, so the national circuit will grow, attracting more and more runners to this thrilling type of trail running,” says SASA chairman James Hallett.
“Skyrunning offers far more than simply trail running, it’s special. It attracts the trail runner who’s drawn to exploring parts of the country that are extraordinary in their natural beauty, far from the madding crowd. And for those who crave the competitive edge, we offer the national circuit – they can race for points for a national ranking.”
The current ranking on the 2014 circuit is based on the results of the Ingeli Skymarathon®, and sees Lucky Miya (above left) and Su Don Wauchope (above right0 in top position of the men’s and women’s category respectively, each with 100 points.
The next four positions in the men’s ranking are held by Prodigal Khumalo (88 points), Andrew Hagen (78 points), Jock Green (72 points) and Steven Erasmus (68 points).
In the women’s category, ranking second to fifth respectively are Tracy Zunckel (88 points), Erica Walker (78 points), Driekie Black (72 points) and Rentia Denissen (68 points).
