OFFICIAL STATEMENT | After much deliberation, Tracy Zunckel, women’s race winner at the Ingeli SkyMarathon® which was held on the 30th of April near Kokstad in KwaZulu Natal, has decided to formally relinquish her place on the two-person team representing South Africa at the upcoming Skyrunning World Championships to be staged at the Buff Epic Trail in Spain in July.
In her reasoning, Zunckel commented that she felt that second-placed female finisher Katya Soggot would be a stronger contender in the 42km SkyMarathon® distance (the distance which the South African athletes will be competing in), opting to remain instead in South Africa to race the inaugural 68km Hout Bay Trail Challenge Ultra (South African ultra distance trail champs) which happens to be on the same weekend.
Due to Zunckel’s decision, SASA has officially awarded Soggot the position of female South African representative who will accompany Ingeli SkyMarathon® men’s race winner Lucky Miya to race in Spain*.
Our best wishes go to Lucky and Katya as they prepare for the World Skyrunning Championships.
* It must be noted that this was in no way influenced by the organisers of the Ingeli SyMarathon® or the South African Skyrunning Association, and has no bearing on the final outcome of the women’s race at the Ingeli SkyMarathon® with Zunckel retaining the overall win and maximum series points awarded in the 2016 South African Skyrunner® Series women’s category.
