Competition heating up 2016 South African Skyrunner® Series

With three heart-pumping races in the bag and three more to go, competition in the 2016 South African Skyrunner® Series is heating up.

Standings after the Drakensberg Northern Trail (40km), the Ingeli SkyMarathon® (42km) and the Wolkberg SkyMarathon® (34km) are now at the stage where every point counts, particularly amongst the top 15 men and women.

Marzelle van der Merwe leads the fray overall with a solid 234 points, having run all three races thus far in this year’s Series. Not far behind her is Rachel Manyathi with 190 points, also with the three events under her belt.

Third overall is Nicky Booyens who, having run only two of the three races but run them well, scores 140 so far, just four points ahead of leader in the men’s division, Stewart Chaperon with 136.

With the Marloth Mountain Challenge (24 September), the Uitsoek SkyMarathon® (22 October) and the Lesotho Ultra Trail (26 November) as the three remaining events in the 2016 Skyrunner® Series, the competition could be anyone’s triumph.

Grown from just three races in 2014, the SA Skyrunner® Series is not only attracting local and international trail runners, but garnering interest from race organisers around the country.

“The great thing about the Skyrunner® Series is that increasing one’s points standing is more about the number of events one competes in, than about running just one or two events and achieving a podium finish in them,” says SASA chairman James Hallett.

“The Series offers a wide variety of skyrunning experiences across South Africa, from the Wolkberg Trail Run in Limpopo, the Uitsoek SkyMarathon® in Mpumalanga, the Lesotho Ultra Trail in Lesotho, the Marloth Mountain Challenge in the Western Cape, and the Ingeli SkyMarathon® and Drakensberg Northern Trail in KZN. These races are different from the usual trail running events, they’re special – they involve the exhilarating experience of skyrunning. And there are no one-time skyrunners – it’s so compelling that everyone comes back for more!”
